Drain tile systems are also commonly called French Drains or Perimeter Drains. These systems are installed by the builder in homes when water problems could be an issue. Using the preexisting drain system for radon mitigation can greatly increase the effectiveness of removing harmful gas. When a vacuum is attached to the drain systems it creates a new pathway for the radon to travel through. The drain acts as a “ready-made highway” for the radon gas to travel through, making these systems the most successful way to mitigate a home. Often times we can access the drain by digging down at ground level or into a window well. This means that everything is on the exterior of the home – no holes are drilled in the basement or through the exterior wall. Our radon system will in no way negatively affect the drainage system of your home.
If we cannot access the French/Perimeter drain from the exterior we can also use the actual sump pit as the draw point. Since the sump pit is attached to the drain this draw point will cover the entire perimeter of the foundation. Your sump pump will work as needed and with the see-through cover we use to seal the access point, you’ll always be able to see inside the pit for water levels. Again, these systems produce the lowest possible post-mitigation radon levels, with or without a sump pump installed.
Removing radon can be a complicated process. To install the system effectively, it is important that you hire a reliable and experienced installation company like American Radon LLC. Many real estate professionals recommend performing a radon test before you try and sell your home. Having an acceptable test result to show a potential buyer could be a reassuring asset. If by chance the results do come back high, having the mitigation performed prior to listing could prevent a potential buyer from being scared away or prevent costly time delays during the sale. American Radon LLC is always happy to walk you through performing a radon test.
